Aim of the field trip

Familiarize with the geobiology of coral reefs, especially getting to know the main reef-building organisms (corals), other invertebrates, and fish. Ecology of the reef system, species interactions, reef geomorphology and zonation, life on a tropical island.

Lithology/Features/Material

Coral reef, tropical beaches, islands, atolls

Field methods

  • visual inspection and mapping of coral reefs (by snorkelling)
  • underwater writing and sketching on dive-slates
  • line- and intercept transects under water (handling measuring tape underwater for transects)
  • underwater photography

Remarks

Snorkelling equipment absolute requirement: Mask, Snorkel, dive-fins (open back), dive booties, full-body wet-suit (3mm maximal thickness).
Course will be held in English.
Participants must be physically fit and able to swim well, and have no fear of the open ocean and coral reef environments.
