Course content

In this practical course, students will learn the most common techniques used to process geological rock samples collected in the field for geochronological or geochemical analysis. Students will learn to crush rocks and separate minerals by physical, chemical, and hand-picking methods. The course takes place in the rock separation facilities of the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences.

Petrological and Geochemical sample preparation (Theory)

Preparation of:

• a thin section
• a glass bead and a powder tablet for XRF whole rock analysis 

Petrologische und geochemische Probenaufbereitung (Theorie)

Erstellung:

• eines Dünnschliffs
• einer Glas- und Presstablette zur Messung mittels RFA 

Analytical methods

• Transmitted Light Microscopy
• X-ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy (XRF)

Remarks

Equipment: 

• notebook / pen / camera / hair tie
• own or provided samples
